Conventional maritime communication networks (MCNs) rely on maritime radio communication systems, satellite communication systems, and broadband wireless access technologies that cannot simultaneously meet the emerging maritime applications of high bandwidth, low latency, and reliable connectivity. In the air segment of the MCN architecture, it is of great significance to fully explore and utilize the advantages of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), such as lift-off line-of-sight (LOS) links and controllable flight trajectories, to construct a UAV-assisted MCN to enhance the performance of the network. Therefore, based on an overview of the existing MCN architecture and communication technologies, this paper focuses on the analysis of key technologies such as channel modeling, UAV energy efficiency, and trajectory optimization in UAV-assisted MCN; lists the typical applications of UAV-assisted marine communication; and, finally, future research directions in UAV-assisted MCN such as user mobility modeling, UAV landing and continuation, and novel spectrum utilization are envisioned.
