The concept of flying taxis, rooted in the broader idea of flying cars, has evolved significantly over time. Known as "passenger drones," "urban air mobility (UAM) vehicles," "personal aerial vehicles (PAV)," and "electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft," these taxis are leading urban transportation innovation.On April 25, 2016, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum launched the Dubai Autonomous Transportation Strategy to integrate autonomous vehicles, including flying taxis, into Dubai’s network. In 2020, the Dubai Horizons initiative, a component of the Dubai Urban Plan 2040, marked the first phase of integrating flying taxis into the city’s infrastructure, with collaborations from Joby Aviation, Inc. and Skyports Infrastructure.The latter part of this article will briefly discuss global regulatory frameworks for unmanned aircraft, focusing on the United States, European Union, United Kingdom, and Singapore. Additionally, it will highlight Dubai’s regulatory environment, particularly Law No. (4) of 2020, which provides a comprehensive framework for unmanned aircraft, including flying taxis, ensuring their safe integration into Dubai’s urban landscape.
