The adaptive correction of the JAERI 100-TW Ti:sapphire laser system is presented. A focused intensity is improved from 4.2 /spl times/ 10/sup 19/ W/cm/sup 2/ to 1.7 /spl times/ 10/sup 20/ W/cm/sup 2/ with a f/4 off-axis parabola. A method employing artificial Shack-Hartmann wavefront reference is used to access 1023 W/cm/sup 2/ at 0.85-PW.
