Wavelength-division-multiplexed (WDM) multi-channel optical communication systems require electronically tunable lasers that access discrete frequency channels over a wide optical frequency range. In this paper we propose and demonstrate a new widely tunable semiconductor laser structure, the three-branch Y3-laser, which provides a particularly simple and promising approach for making such tunable lasers.<>
