This paper introduces a new approach to overcome the limitations of the conventional percentage biased differential scheme (87M), which is prone to mal-operation due to the presence of decaying DC components at the time of CT saturation. The proposed approach aims to enhance fault detection, discrimination, categorization, and faulty phase identification for stator winding faults in Induction motors (IMs). The suggested method begins by calculating the first derivative of the measured supply-side current signals to detect internal/external fault conditions. Then, three-phase discrimination factors and their average values are estimated to distinguish between internal and external faults. Additionally, phase and ground faults are differentiated based on the neutral current, which is derived using the supply-side neutral current and the neutral-side neutral current. The efficacy of the suggested technique is validated through numerous test cases, which are generated by modelling IM system in PSCAD/EMTDC software. The results demonstrate the robustness of the presented approach in identifying and classifying internal faults in the stator of IM under varying fault resistance and load conditions. Moreover, the suggested approach remains stable during external faults involving CT saturation.
