◇? DO-178 has become the De-facto standard for software aspects of certification, and is usually considered to be successful due to the aviation industries strong software safety record. ◇? The aviation industry is challenged by drastically increasing software complexity and cost. ◇? Discussions of cost of using the DO-178 standard do not consider the impact on the industry of using innovation to combat software difficulties, such as complexity and therefore do no consider a long term cost effect. ◇? A Literature review was conducted to understand areas where the usage of DO-178 may have introduced long term cost effects on the industry. ◇? The literature review produced 10 key observations.
