The Ohio State University Center for Intelligent Transportation (CITR), an Associate Member of the NAHSC (National Automated Highway System Consortium), was invited to participate in the 1997 Technology Demonstration, providing a scenario which came to be labeled "alternative technologies". OSU demonstrated two fully automated cars, illustrating autonomous behavior with a third manual car. It also demonstrated the use of a radar reflective stripe placed on the roadway for steering purposes, providing an alternative technology to using distinct magnets.
