The design and construction of elevated structures for DC traction systems requires a wide range of voltage safety and infrastructure integrity risks to be considered and mitigated. These risks include metallic corrosion due to stray DC traction current and electrical hazards arising from earth faults and lightning strikes. These risks are different to the typical considerations made for the design of road bridges and AC or diesel operated rail services. If not managed properly, these risks could lead to injury, death and structural damage to the bridge or third-party assets. This paper summarises the earthing and bonding strategy developed for the elevated DC railway of the Caulfield to Dandenong Level Crossing Removal Project (CTD) including design implementations required to achieve this strategy.
