Due to the global crisis of climate change and the increasingly strict emission regulations, governments and industrial sectors have regarded electric vehicles (EVs) as the future replacement of conventional vehicles with internal combustion engines to fulfill the future consumer market requirements. Nevertheless, range anxiety is still one of the biggest obstacles in the transportation electrification process. Therefore, increasing powertrain efficiency is still one of the most critical topics in the research community. This paper compares two of the most widely used energy management strategies with the recently developed nonlinear model predictive control strategy concerning their ability to increase powertrain efficiency. The simulation results demonstrate the performance differences from different points of view.
