Intelligent transportation system is becoming more and more popular, and vehicle type classification is the most important and basic part of it, which can be used in traffic flow detection, expressway billing system and other fields. On this basis, a vehicle type classification system based on the improved convolutional neural network is designed to classify the vehicle types on the expressway. And the trained model is applied to vehicle classification of video surveillance images. The validity of the improved convolutional neural network model is verified in this paper, and the model shows good effects on the accuracy of vehicle type classification. It has achieved more than 95% accuracy.
