Large photoinduced refractive index changes in hydrogen-loaded GeO/sub 2/-doped optical fibers have recently been achieved by exposure to UV light. Much of the work in this area has focused on sensor applications of Bragg reflectors, which result from periodic refractive index changes induced by exposing the fiber to the interference pattern of two crossed plane waves. In the paper, the authors describe the applications of easily-fabricated, broadband Fresnel reflector sites for OTDR-based distributed sensing as well as for the fabrication of localized intrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometric sensors.
