This paper presents the development of an apparatus and associated practical methodologies for time-resolved laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy (TR-LIFS) of tissues that account for clinical needs and overcome some of the barriers that have limited its implementations in clinical settings. These include rapid fluorescence data acquisition with high temporal resolution and sensitivity within a broad range of emission wavelengths; rapid data processing, analysis and display; and compact and portable instrumentation.
