The simulation of safe ship navigation using a ship maneuver simulator has been used frequently in the design of port and harbor facilities, test of ship maneuverability, and assessment of port channel and terminal safety. Rational recommendations for improving the navigation safety can often be made by analyzing and evaluating the simulation results. This paper discusses the core technical problems associated with various aspects in ship handling simulation tests including the ship handling simulation system, ship motion mathematical model, electronic chart generation, navigation environment simulation, visual database modelling, and pathway superposition display. Finally, the safety assessment of navigation at the Macun port in Haikou is performed using the ship handling simulator and the pathway superposition display function. The simulation results are analyzed and evaluated in this study.
