Since the advent of 56K modem technology, there is a need for a small, scaleable, server-side technology for use in small-to-medium size businesses, home offices, and branch offices. Current designs are either unwieldy or non-scaleable. By using a time-division Multiplexed bus, along with small microcontrollers, one can create custom solutions to fit these markets. However, this requires a bit of creativity and custom work. This paper describes the challenges faced by Global Village in creating a custom solution, and discusses the decisions made in order to go to market with such a product in a timely fashion.
