Recently, both simulation and experimental results have shown that the time evolution of the output wave power from a gyro backward wave oscillator exhibits modulation. The modulation occurs when the beam current is just above as well as far above the threshold. The latter is the result of electron trapping by the wave while the former (electron transit time is smaller than wave trapping time) can be explained by perturbative theory.
