New service management paradigms, protocols and control mechanisms are required for supporting today's Internet service heterogeneity and integration while providing consistent quality of service (QoS). Within service management, admission control has been recognized as a convenient mechanism to provide high-quality communication by ensuring resources availability. It represents a meaning in fulfilling the contracted service level agreement (SLA) between the user and the network provider. This paper provides a thorough analysis on different classification approaches for admission control techniques, while identifying their characteristics, differences and analogies. It gives a more detailed analysis on the measurement-based admission control, and introduces an admission control approach based on measurements. The performance of this algorithm is illustrated through simulation results.
