In this paper, a compact active imaging system that allows real-time video visualization of methane plumes is described. The development of this instrument is motivated by the need for technology to allow the rapid identification and localization of natural gas leaks by the Japanese gas industry. Because it yields an instantaneous view of a three-dimensional volume, the described device provides a more efficient means of leak detection than existing methods based on point-sensing flame-ionization detectors.
