Freight transportation is crucial for efficient supply chain operations, ensuring the smooth movement and timely availability of products. A key decision in freight transportation management is selecting the optimal transportation mode and route for freight movement. This decision-making process involves identifying relevant performance criteria, selecting the most suitable mode of transport and route, negotiating rates and service levels, and assessing performance. Logistics managers play a vital role in making these decisions and should possess a comprehensive understanding of the various factors, both quantitative and qualitative, that influence freight mode choice. This knowledge is essential for effective decision-making and the formulation of policies that encourage the adoption of sustainable transportation modes. For decades, road transportation has been the leading mode of inland freight transportation. However, intermodal transportation, which combines road transport with other modes of transportation, offers the potential for reduced operating costs and improved environmental sustainability. The objective of this research is to systematically review the existing literature on decision-making processes regarding modal choices in intermodal freight transportation.
