This paper considers an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-assisted multi-tag ambient backscatter communication system over Nakagami-m fading channels. Assuming that the RF source-tags and tags-reader direct links are blocked, however, they are supported by two IRSs. Taking into account the IRSs phase errors, the outage and bit error rate performance of the system are assessed based on the selection combining (SC) diversity scheme through two different methods, Laguerre series and Gaussian approximation. Numerical and simulation results validate the superiority and accuracy of the Laguerre series method compared to that of the Gaussian approximation, in particular, for a small number of tags and IRS elements, and higher levels of phase errors. The results also indicate that the IRS phase errors significantly impact the system performance.
