Summary form only given. Er-doped fluoride glass is one of the promising material for a wide-band optical fiber amplifier used in a future wavelength division multiplexing (WDM). We prove that Ce co-doping into Er fluoride glass significantly improves the fluorescence quantum yield for the 1.55 /spl mu/m transition after 980 nm excitation. The Ce:Er doped fluoride glass is a new candidate material of a fiber amplifier for WDM applications.
