Summary form only given. Summary form only given. The fiber-optic gyroscope, first demonstrated in 1976, represents a highly successful impact of fiber optics on rotation sensing. This talk will address the advantages and disadvantages of fiber gyro's current status. The fiber gyro is solid state in that it has no mechanical moving parts and does not require mechanical dithering, as most ring laser gyros do. It has advantages of small size and weight, and low cost.
