In this talk, wavelength-division multiplexed (WDM) passive optical networks (PON) will be proposed as an economically viable broadband network which can be shared transparently among multiple service providers. As WDM subsystems become increasingly common in both terrestrial and undersea longhaul networks, key WDM components, such as tunable and multiple-wavelength transmitters, and waveguide-grating routers (WGR), will naturally evolve toward commodity items.
