Summary form only given. Two photonic crystal filters have been designed using 2-D FDTD software and fabricated using electron beam lithography and reactive ion etching on an AlGaAs epitaxial structure. The radiation filter may be used as a channel-dropping filter, because at resonance, light is strongly radiated in a particular direction and may be collected by another waveguide (optical fibre or channel waveguide). Secondly, a one-dimensional waveguide photonic crystal microcavity with strong field confinement and very high optical transmission has also been demonstrated. The mode matching features clearly improve transmission. This type of device offers many exciting possibilities, such as compact, sharp transmission wavelength-selective optical filters and ultra-low threshold lasers.
