In this paper, we show experimentally that the ion-pair induced self-pulsing in Er-doped fiber lasers can be suppressed by selecting proper lasing wavelengths. A new model is proposed to explain the experimental results, and our calculated results show that the effect of Er-ion pairs depends critically on the ratio of emission to absorption cross sections of Er-ion.
