Interconnected microgrids (MGs) cooperating by means of the distribution system enable the widespread use of the neighborhood accessible distributed energy resources (DERs). This technology greatly improves the reliability and robustness of the power supply. The use of cost-free electricity generated by PV and wind turbines lowers overall energy costs. The most efficient use of DERs can be realized with networked MGs. Putting the concepts of interconnected microgrids (MGs) into effect, on the other hand will take a lot of time and effort. This paper contributes a comprehensive list of the most critical studies on networked MGs. The key benefits and drawbacks of this new and fast-evolving sector have been investigated. In addition, among the most relevant research areas in interconnected MGs have been highlighted, and future prospects have been addressed.
