This article first identifies the power inductor as a major radiated electromagnetic interference (EMI) source in a power converter in electric vehicles (EVs) at low frequencies (LFs). The radiation model is developed for the inductor based on electric dipole moment theory to understand the radiation mechanism and predict radiated EMI for the power converter. The inductor’s common-mode (CM) voltage is identified as the dominant contributor to the radiated EMI at LFs. The impacts of the printed circuit board (PCB) ground and CISPR 25 EMI measurement setup for EVs on the radiated electric field were also investigated. The proposed prediction technique is experimentally verified and extended to inductors with different shapes.
