Membrane/inflatable structures for space applications hold great promise. Their reduced launch mass and stowed volume suggests the possibility of large aperture antenna and reflectors for increased resolution, and solar sails and shades that can span great distances. However, their extreme flexibility provides for significant challenge with regard to the control of their deployment and shape. This paper reviews many of the issues involved with the control of membrane/inflatables for space applications, and suggests directions for future research activities.
