Wavelength conversion has been shown to provide an essential flexibility for managing an efficient, reconfigurable wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) network. An integrated SOA/DFB laser has shown promise as a simple all-optical wavelength conversion device together with useful simultaneous functions such as 2R regeneration and the ability to remove a wavelength identifying tone. Wavelength conversion performance at 20Gb/s and 40Gb/s will also be presented at the conference, in addition to a review of the current field.
