Roughly 30% of the European CO2 emissions can be accounted to the transportation sector. Compared to other sectors, transportation also is the only one that has not made any progress towards achieving the emission targets set by the European Union. For this reason, it becomes critical to correctly measure how much CO2 is being emitted due to personal transportation [1]. We analyse previous research on the area of mode of transportation identification, and propose a new approach on how to detect used mode of transportation and thus derive CO2 emission for personal rides. We use mobile GPS data to calculate speed, acceleration, and distance travelled through a trip. After splitting the trip into different walking segments, we then extend the approach to computing CO2 emission for multi modal routes.
