The most significant recent development in fiber nonlinear optics is the fiber amplifier. Higher power from optical amplification directly impacts lightwave systems, optical signal processing, and lasers. Even without optical amplifiers, the trend is to higher intensities in fibers which increases the role of nonlinearities. The effects of these nonlinearities range from total frequency conversion to a subtle increase in noise. Fiber nonlinear optics is now a huge field and spans not just traditional nonlinear effects like stimulated Raman and Brillouin scattering but also self-organized second harmonic generation and solitons. Here we concentrate on those aspects of fiber nonlinear optics that are undergoing rapid change because of the fiber amplifier.<>
