Space based radar (SBR) places extraordinary demands on spacecraft power systems. Requirements for high power output (20-100 kWe), long lifetime (15-20 yrs, potentially in a high radiation environment), and reduced cost per Watt require substantial advances in present day technology. This paper describes the power system programs that are funded by the Air Force Phillips Laboratory and other government organizations that address these requirements, including multijunction solar cells, high performance batteries and flywheels, high efficiency power electronics, and solar thermal systems with integrated energy generation and storage.
