This paper investigated the potential role of HAP in wide-area and staring SAR imaging. Since it is necessary to suppress possible range ambiguities in wide-area SAR imaging, we discussed several multichannel transceiver-based approaches, including azimuth SIMO multichannel SAR, elevation SIMO multichannel SAR, and MIMO multichannel SAR. Their system implementations and system performance are compared. We think that HAP is a good platform choice for wide-area and staring SAR imaging, particularly the elevation SIMO multichannel and MIMO multichannel configurations.
