6-slot/2-pole permanent magnet (PM) motors with tooth-coil windings are employed widely for high-speed application due to short end-winding and no inherent magnetic force. However, tooth-coil windings can be replaced by 2 and 3 coil-pitch windings for winding factor improvement. Different winding configurations mainly affect winding factor and end-winding length, and consequently average torque and torque density. In this paper, three 6-slot/2-pole high-speed PM (HSPM) motors with 1, 2, and 3 coil-pitch windings are optimized for maximum average torque by finite element method (FEM). Their electromagnetic performances are then compared, accounting for the influence of motor axial length and end-winding. It is found that for high-speed application, compared with 1 and 3 coil-pitches, 2 coil-pitch has a good trade-off between winding factor and end-winding axial length which are attractive for high efficiency and large torque density.
