Summary form only given. The Optoelectronic Industry Development Association (OIDA) is conducting a 2 year program to develop a roadmap to improve the competitiveness of the North American Optoelectronic Industry. In the first phase of this program (in 1992) an industry consensus view has been developed of the worldwide market opportunities that are expected to total approximately $100 Billion in 20 years. The market areas covered in this program include: computer, communication, consumer, industrial and medical, military and aerospace, and automotive. Phase II of the program is to develop a set of industry consensus critical technology roadmaps during 1993. Major technologies include: displays, optical communications, optical storage, optics in computing, optical materials, and hard copy. This talk will identify the major market opportunities, the critical technologies required, and address some of the key issues required to successfully get technology out of the lab and into the marketplace.<>
