Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) has been known as NASA’s propulsion center of excellence for lunar missions since its inception developing rockets for the Apollo program. Today, MSFC is home to the agency’s super heavy lift launch vehicle for exploring deep space, the Space Launch System (SLS), and a propulsion systems department with expertise not just in engine systems, but also propulsion components, detailed propulsion modeling, analysis, and design, complete propulsion systems for launch vehicles and spacecraft, and much more.The Center is also home to the Human Landing System program, responsible for the development of spacecraft that will land the next American astronauts on the Moon and return them safely to lunar orbit. While US industry is leading the design and development of these human landing systems, MSFC is providing critical insight and expertise, particularly in the area of propulsion.The human landing systems in development by both SpaceX and the Blue Origin-led team will require significant technology development in key areas such as engine development, cryogenic fluid management, and propellant transfer. NASA’s HLS team is working closely with both companies to ensure they are benefiting from MSFC’s propulsion expertise and testing capabilities.In addition to providing subject matter experts and test facilities, MSFC is leading propulsion insight efforts for the program. This includes working with industry partners to understand their propulsion systems in order to properly inform the HLS program of schedule and technical risks, as well as supporting design certification, flight readiness, and flight operations. The insight team also supports the HLS Program Manager and Chief Engineer in decisions they must make by providing key knowledge and engineering assessments.This paper will detail MSFC’s role in supporting industry-led human landing system development in the area of propulsion by discussing the Center’s capabilities and expertise used to land the next American astronauts on the Moon.
