At present, with the increase in vehicle usage, most of the people in Sri Lanka tend to use expressways due to many reasons like time-saving and less traffic. The number of accidents that occur in expressways are drastically increasing in recent years. Most of these accidents are occurred due to the violation of the rules established in the expressways. We have identified some of the major rule violations that are done by most of the people who are using expressways. They are speed violation, parking violation, and reverse violation. Because of these violations, lots of accidents occur causing severe damages to properties and sometimes cause the death of the people. Therefore, detecting these violations is a major concern. In this paper, we have suggested a method to detect the above-mentioned violations. The system we have implemented includes four major components that include vehicle type detection, detecting the over-speed driving vehicles in the expressways, detecting vehicles that are illegally parking in the expressway, and detecting vehicles that are traveling in the reverse direction in the expressways. The inputs to the system are the videos obtained from the surveillance cameras that are in the expressways in Sri Lanka. The system processes these input videos using image and video processing techniques and detects the vehicles that are violating the above-mentioned violations as the output. And the system implemented is user-friendly, detects the vehicles with good accuracy, and is very cost-effective. This system detects the mentioned rules violations automatically with a 95% accuracy. The proposed system works as a real-time application.
