This paper presents a comparison of various fault scenarios originated from the machine and machine's drive in a permanent-magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drive. In this study both surface mount permanent magnet motor (SPM) and Interior permanent magnet motor (IPM) are included. Analytical and finite element (FE) analyses are presented to analyze the performance of both motors under different fault conditions. Test results to validate the analytical and FE results are also included in the paper.
