Gray-tracking susceptibility of Gd/sub x/Y/sub 1-x/Ca/sub 4/O(BO/sub 3/)/sub 3/ (GdYCOB) was investigated by measuring a change in optical transmission at 355 nm. Crystals grown from high-quality sintered materials possess higher damage tolerance than conventional ones.
