The ARS-R, communications-based train control (CBTC) system under development, is the key element of the integrated automatic train control network in the Moscow Metro, Russia. It accomplishes vital functions providing safety of traffic movement. The ARS-R system performs automatic train speed regulation utilizing a radio channel for train-to-wayside data communications. The integrated network is combined to perform the safety-critical automatic train protection (ATP), as well as automatic train supervision (ATS) and automatic train operation (ATO) functions. Each function is provided by the additional fail-safe hardware which is installed along with the appropriate software utilizing mutual data communications architecture. This paper describes the configuration, design principles, operational algorithms and the number of technical characteristics of the ARS-R including the radio communications subsystem.
