Many computer-based training programs (CBTs) have been developed for use in pilot training. Those related to improving the decision making skills of pilots hold great promise. However, all too often, this promise has gone unrealized because of serious flaws in the structure and design of these training programs. I have identified four major areas in which these flaws commonly appear. When these flaws are present they greatly restrict the educational usefulness of such programs and can even be counterproductive when used in pilot training. I restrict my focus to those flaws found in self-contained CBTs which usually are available via CD-ROM.
