Summary form only given. For the first time stable laser action at 1062 nm and self frequency doubling at 531 nm are demonstrated for Yb/sup 3+/:MgO:LiNbO/sub 3/ crystals. LiNbO/sub 3/ is one of the most deeply studied optoelectronical materials because of its excellent nonlinear, electro-optical and acousto-optical coefficients. Former experiments with Yb/sup 3+/:LiNbO/sub 3/ achieved laser action in Ti-indiffused channel waveguide form, but no stable performance was possible due to the photorefractive damage. It is shown that for stabilization MgO can be added to the melt in a 6% Mg/Li proportion during the crystal growth.
