Potassium titanyl arsenate KTiOAsO/sub 4/ (KTA) is a new nonlinear optical material, like its well-known analogue KTiOPO/sub 4/ (KTP), but with a larger nonlinear coefficient, higher figure of merit and lower ionic conductivity. It has been reported that Fe, Sc, and In doping of KTA can play an important role in developing its favorable properties for optical purposes. Here we present an investigation of refractive nonlinearity in Fe-doped and undoped KTA crystals by using a Z-scan technique with linearly polarized 120-fs (FWHM), 770-nm laser pulses. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first observation of the third-order nonlinearity in KTA with femtosecond pulses. The effect of Fe-doping on Kerr nonlinearity in KTA is also discussed.
