Light detection and ranging (LiDAR) technology is among the vehicular sensors enabling autonomous driving capabilities. Besides LiDAR being integrated into the vehicle, it has many other potential use cases that revolve around modern vehicles. This paper investigates LiDAR-scanning to create realistic virtual testing environments and digital twins. We focus on accurately importing LiDAR-generated 3D models into the simulation engine and evaluating different reconstruction algorithms used to create them. Additionally, we seek to develop an efficient pipeline for real-time LiDAR data processing, minimizing computational overhead and energy consumption to enhance scalability for vehicle applications. Lastly, we discuss how vehicles not equipped with a LiDAR sensor can utilize and interact with point cloud data received through communication with other entities.
