A clear impact on bit error rate behavior in 3 Gbit/s data transmission and emission characteristics of VCSELs grown in the <100> direction under optical feedback with polarization control has been shown. Applying polarization controlled feedback to a solitary linearly polarized oscillating VCSEL can either lead to stable linearly polarized light emission or to unstable optical output on two orthogonal modes. Compared to back to back testing the power penalty at a bit error rate of 10/sup -9/ for -15 dB feedback is 0.3 dB or 2.5 dB depending on the polarization of the light fed back into the laser cavity. The results indicate that polarization control in the VCSEL is essential for stable light emission.
