In recent years, we have seen considerable developments in industrial technologies. For this reason, this article proposes a scientific review of the collaborative simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) applied to autonomous mobile robots (AMRs), which is also called multi-robot SLAM. SLAM represents a fundamental problem in collaborative robotics, since map construction and ego-motion estimation are mandatory to achieve autonomous navigation. Consequently, collaborative SLAM has become the most preferred technique for upcoming robotic applications. In this paper, the fundamental constructs of SLAM are defined through a deep study of the literature. The main limitations and challenges of collaborative SLAM applied to autonomous mobile robots are also extracted. We conclude with a discussion of current events in the field and promising research directions.
