We have evaluated the nonlinear dispersion relation in multilayer nonlinear waveguides, which are applicable to either self-focusing or self-defocusing nonlinear structures. We have also presented the nonlinear dispersion curves and the power distribution for several thicknesses of the linear core layers and the nonlinear bounding layers. The self-focusing nonlinear systems show the following: (1) the power-dependent effective index of the TE/sub 1/ mode becomes larger than that of the core film and the TE/sub 0/ mode in the high power region and (2) the power distribution displays an optical bistability which is similar to that of a nonlinear Fabry-Perot etalon.
