Improved communications performance and higher data rates are necessary to support future airspace operations. Application of new technology to update aeronautical HF can provide a viable solution for long range communication with higher data rates and improved performance to satisfy Required Communication Performance (RCP) requirements for future airspace. This paper provides information on the viability of using a modernized HF system supporting higher availability, better reliability, and reduced transaction time meeting RCP requirements necessary for reduced separation. As a result, the modernized HF system will provide a synergistic terrestrial based long range communication solution complementing celestial based (SATCOM) long range communication solutions. The resulting combination improves link availability, reliability, safety, and security of the resulting Long Range Communication System (LRCS) during events such as solar weather storms. Inserting technologies and protocols from advanced HF military modem standards that have been developed in the last few years, as well as other advanced commercial industry communication solutions, will allow modernizing the Aeronautical HF system. The modernized HF system will operate within the existing allocated frequency spectrum using new frequency assignments and emission types. The new system expands existing HF capabilities by adding improved link establishment, link maintenance, and crew automation in addition to higher data rates. Existing ground infrastructure is similarly updated as well to support the enhanced HF avionics system. In addition, enhanced voice communication is provided through digital voice encoding, reducing noise and increasing clarity. The advanced HF approach presented is able to extend the useable lifespan of Aeronautical HF Long range communications services by implementing updated designs to both airborne radios and ground infrastructure with backward compatibility maintained. Continuity of service is maintained using existing HFDL, while higher bandwidth, enhanced HF waveforms are being fielded. Such an approach allows Aeronautical HF services upgrades in the airspace regions when and where they are needed incrementally and cost effectively.
