Recent self-consistent time-domain Fourier-transform (TDFT) simulations showed that a semiconductor laser patterned with a two-dimensional (2D) photonic crystal distributed feedback (PCDFB) grating can maintain strong spatial coherence and high spectral selectivity out to wider stripes than an angled-grating DFB ((/spl alpha/-DFB) laser. Here we report the demonstration of a PCDFB laser with a second order rectangular grating oriented at 20/spl deg/ with respect to the facet normal. The circular features were patterned by optical lithography and reactive-ion etching.
