The authors describe construction of a spectrometer to monitor laser-induced fluorescence during excimer laser corneal surgery. Studies to compare spectral differences between various normal and diseased states of the cornea are currently underway. Included in these investigations are measurements of fluorescence from aged and diabetic corneas which are known to behave differently than younger, non-diabetic corneas. The authors' hope is to identify spectral markers predictive of eventual healing and refractive outcome. All of these data taken together, besides enhancing one's knowledge of the biochemistry of the cornea in various states of ocular health, may also guide the alteration of excimer laser ablative patterns to achieve more predictable surgical results by using spectroscopic feedback information.
