Summary form only given. Image mode lasers, which consist of a voltage-controlled pixilated variable loss element placed inside a high-gain laser cavity, have been demonstrated as a feasible method for video projection display. Two methods of creating this cavity loss are examined: the scattering polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC), and the absorptive twisted nematic (IN) liquid crystal element. The effects of amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) and how they relate to the choice of the loss element are discussed. Evaluation and comparison of 1/4 VGA resolution lasing images to a commercial projection display is also presented.
